KENZO IN THE STREETS DOSTOEVSKIJ IN THE SHEETS

Fashion, Flamboyant Exclusive

Since joining the house in 2011, Carol Lim and Humberto Leon have brought it back to its original DNA with collections full of bold colors and vivid prints, an eye for sportswear and street style, artist collaborations and creative digital campaigns. Their collaboration with H&M is further proof of the way they push forward the legacy of the house with a knowledge of its history but an eye to the present and the future. An explosion of prints, colors and layers, the KENZO X H&M collection is a perfect example in how to bring a fashion house’s evolution to the general public. Launched in NY with a fashion show and event art directed by Jean Paul Goude which featured dancers, beatboxers, whistlers and musicians, the collection mixes jungle, sportswear and folk in a fun, energetic way.

Taking inspiration from Kenzo Takada’s mix & match attitude ( which originally wasn’t quite a choice as he had to source his fabrics from flea markets) The designer duo of Lim and Leon paired colorful animal prints, floral patterns and folkloric dresses, romantic ruffles and neoprene, bold colors and prints, some even on the same item as many are double-face.
“Kenzo, as a brand, has such a rich and fascinating history, it can be hard to determine what exactly we have changed, with our new collections, we hope that we have injected the brand with a youthful spirit and a sense of fun and cheekiness.’’ Leon has said a year after they started designing for the house, ‘’ But we also want to respect and preserve the traditions of the Kenzo house, such as the importance of prints and the sense of worldliness and travel that has been intrinsic to every collection in the history of Kenzo.” Their collaboration with H&M might not be the ideal wardrobe of the retiring flower, but it shows their impressive grasp on the delicate balance between modern attitude and brand heritage.

The KENZO x H&M collection will be available in over 250 H&M stores worldwide, as well as online, from November 3.

#hardcore95, works as the title, mood and a graphic for STILL ILL‘s FW 16/17 capsule collection. There’s a mid-90s general feel to the pieces and inspiration spans from Belgian gabbers and hardcore punk to the cult movie The Doom Generation, which turned 20 last year. A desire to mix the digital and a more manual approach translates into hand-drawn graffiti written directly on patterns, so they follow the shape of the garment and mix with the graphics, and a DIY section of hand-bleached denim with patches. Posters from  the seminal Gregg Araki movie are also cut up and pasted into collages to create prints for tunics and tops, the lo-fi mood of ripped and glued paper heightened by the extreme enlargement of small low quality digital images. As a whole a rougher and tougher look that nods to Stephen Sprouse and his luxe-punk aesthetic but with a cheaper, grungier 90s feel and a touch of digital reappropriation.

The collection is already available for press at Maximilian Linz PR even though more customized pieces will be presented in a few weeks. This will be the last STILL ILL capsule to have a seasonal denomination and will be on sale online during MFW.

STILL ILL’ SS16 collection, ‘Quentin Crisp at the Flaunt It Club’, inspired by a strange clip of  the iconic Stately Homo/Resident Alien mixing with The Club Kids in NY, is a graphic romp through clubbing and gender. We decided to shoot it in an easy, silly, slightly 90s way, a bit of a domestic rave where all the drugs are good and people dress up throwing on random make up and a fast, fun, ensemble. Can Easy-Rave-Chic be the season’s hot look? Enjoy.

ALL CLOTHES ANGELOS FRENTZOS SS 16

Uncovered Federation, Frentzos’ SS16 menswear collection, plays with familiar themes in ways that manage to be at the same time clever and romantic. Photographs of a vintage pilot’s overalls become an all-over print that enlarges the intricate lacing and details and mixes them with actual bondage straps in a virtual military straitjacket effect. Big patches with unfinished, raw, edges are attached with velcro straps, pants with uneven hems can be draped to the same length, straps and drawstrings make most pieces adjustable and give the wearer both comfort and power over the clothes. Even though they possess  a certain aggressive energy there is a softness about these clothes, like the romance of a long battle. With fabrics that look distressed by desert winds, jackets that grow siamese-twin doubles left hanging upside down like the coat-tails of an ancient military coat, sweaters built around holes, rope waistcoats that look more like macramè than japanese bondage, if there is a sense of rebellion and upheaval about them, it’s most certainly a revolt into style.

Being at the forefront of the Sport/Luxe trend of the last few seasons, Wang was the ideal candidate to create a sort of A-Z of metropolitan sportswear for the larger public. With a palette that runs the gamut, so to speak, from light grey to black, and materials like neoprene, leather and dry-fit the collection moves from sport to catwalk, to sidewalk, and back again. This is a little mixed media experiment on altering photos inside an iPhone, using Glitchè and other apps, stealing conversations, emoticons, screenshots from an online parallel life and using them out of context as a decorative commentary. Blurring the lines between reality and hyper-reality, who knows what it all means? Where it all comes from? Doing it with Jeremy’s FW14 collection for Adidas seemed apt, as his work is in itself an experiment in mix-matching pop culture and references, taking sportswear way out of it’s comfort zone to drag it into a leather bar, for example……And is it still beauty, is it fashion still, even after the confines have been expanded and twisted?

It’s Pop, but is it Art? Obviously not, but I still hope you’ll enjoy it

I don’t usually do this, and I have to say I often get really good shoots from my students in my various classes at IED, and this year in particular I’m very happy with the work they produced for their final thesis project, but this shoot somehow resonated with me more than the others, maybe because doing something new and cool with Grunge isn’t that easy, maybe because some of its beauty derives from chance and error, maybe because I’m a sucker for the underdog. Whatever the reason I still think this is one of the best things I’ve seen in menswear as a teacher so far, and I wanted to share it with you. Enjoy.
