ALL CLOTHES AND ACCESSORIES MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA WITH H&M ( EXEPT GREY LONG-JOHNS AND SOCKS VINTAGE H&M)
Go on, dont lie, when you first heard of the upcoming collab between minimalist house par excellence Maison Martin Margiela and fast-fashion giant H&M you, like me, cringed a tiny bit and thought ”omg this is SO not gonna work..’ thinking lightly that THAT was something you neednt worry saving your money for.. WEEL HUNTYS YOU, AND I WERE MAJORLY WRONG… I’m not new to a volte-face, you might have noticed, but this time, when I finally had a chance to see and touch the clothes, I spun so fast the weather in Australia changed for a week. Not only does the collaboration focus on the recreation of iconic pieces from the Margiela archives, but it also shows incredible production levels, and once settled into the idea one can easily see how the pairing can make perfect sense, as Margiela himself always pushed the team and the ‘idea’ before anything, and never really cared too much about the concept of ‘luxe’.
A big part of his menswear for example was either a total recreation of favorite vintage finds, or a reworking of classic pieces, identity, class and status never anything but a negative counterpoint to anything the Maison put forth.
The ‘darted dress’ Evelina wears is a perfect example, copied from a recent collection but featuring many classic Margiela details, the hourglass, oversize sweater is a masterpiece of subtle kookiness, as is the partly inside-out sweater Simone is wearing, a classic twisted so subtly it might even look normal to an untrained eye. One of our favorites is the leather straps jacket, originally an incredibly expensive Artisanal piece perfectly reproduced for, well let’s say it, under 300€…
I won’t bore you any further as I know perfectly you only cared for the pics to begin with… but stay tuned because…well there might be more to come…
